Keng Susumpow Google loves its engineers. So it's not much of a surprise that Google's software engineers are the best-paid employees at the company. We've assembled a list of the best-paying jobs at Google.

Some of the roles might surprise you. With engineers in charge at Google, sales and account managers are at the bottom of the pack. Associates are at the bottom of even that rung, so they have the smallest salary.

Just above the traditional associate role is an AdWords associate — one of Google's largest ad platforms. These salespeople still make half of what most engineers make, though.

Account managers handle sales and marketing relationships with specific, bigger customers. A big chunk of Google's sales staff is based in New York. Google still has to employ some analysts to make sure its financial operations are running smoothly.

It's a more quantitative role, so it requires a bit more expertise — and nets a higher salary. Software engineering interns at Google actually make a decent amount of money, compared to sales and marketing staff. They're among some of the highest-paid interns in technology.

Network engineers make sure everything is running smoothly at a company's intranet. You can't check into code bases and communicate across the company effectively without a strong network.

Designers are definitely valuable, but it seems like they aren't quite as valuable as engineers. Google pays its UI designers only slightly more than interns. Some account managers make more money than engineering interns, but not more than traditional software engineers. Still, that's a pretty decent salary. Google has an enormous amount of data and has to access it regularly to keep its search results up to date and accurate.

While these administrators aren't crunching away on new Google products, they're a key part of the team. You can literally lose thousands, if not tens of thousands, of dollars if your site is down for even a few seconds.

While user interface designers work on how the product looks, user experience or UX researchers make sure Google knows how its customers feel about the products. That's how Google figures out which designs are working and which designs aren't.

Software engineers are Google's bread and butter. They make sure everything gets done and they crunch out code for all of Google's products, like search and Android. Still, not all software engineers are among the best-paying jobs at Google.

To keep developing new products and features, Google had to enlarge its talent pool. Certainly, the company had become one of the largest in tech, so it had no problems attracting strong candidates.

Why start in-house training, instead of simply hiring the best from everywhere else? Well, as you know, working culture at Google differs radically from many other tech companies. But they expect true self-starters to lead the way. Expect to change from mobile to search to machine learning; as much as the company itself switches its priorities!

Does this sound radical? There are not many places like this: an external hire, while versed in tech, could find it quite difficult to adjust. Whether you remain at Google, join an Alphabet spin-off, or embark on your own product adventure; the APMP certainly seems to be doing something right.

Of course, an opportunity to work at Google is not a hard sell. As mentioned above, over two years these APMs are meant to build a product. Slowly, they are supposed to learn to rely less on their own work and get used to interacting and managing teams. From marketing, engineering, and finance, PMing is a full-spectrum job with lots of responsibilities.

One cool bonus within the program is a two-week trip to Google offices across the world. Google interviews are tough.

In addition to the usual preparation that goes with them, you need to be ready to show something special in the way you address and solve problems. They will probably describe an actual challenge and ask you to solve it.

And expect the unexpected! This is because the program attempts to flesh out who is not simply a coding or data genius, but also has business and marketing sense. This is why at Product School we have been training our students to become professionals across every sphere in tech. When tech leaders like Marissa Mayer are involved, you simply follow. Chapter 7 on resumes is pretty good. Decode and Conquer covers interview questions in greater depth, providing dozens of useful practice questions. At any rate, practice every question in Chapters 2—8 design and estimation. They are awesome. Pricing, marketing, market entry, or vision questions are pretty rare for PM interviews in general, so chapters 9—15 which focus on these topics are worth a skim at best.

Chapter 16 behavioral is solid. To get ahead of the competition, you need to know the tech industry: notable trends, major companies and competitors, rapidly-growing markets, etc.

This industry knowledge will help you craft better answers and stand out as a subject-matter expert. Also, if you can chat with an interviewer about the product they work on — including features, competitors, trends, and business decisions — you will leave an excellent impression.

Being able to do this was tremendously useful to me in my interviews.

Back inthe company was hiring droves of new engineers and needed to fill product manager positions fast, but experienced people from other big tech companies were used to a top-down command structure that didn't fit in well at Google.

Mayer started the two-year rotational training program to home-grow managers who would be more " Googley. The program targets freshly graduated computer science majors in particular. Mackinlay during the APM trip. She got a full-time APM position when she graduated. The program has a weighty legacy, but she says she's too busy and excited to focus on the pressure. During the first year of the program the APMs don't get to choose which project they work on.

The idea is that Google will place each person in a situation they might not have picked but will help them grow. Mackinlay landed on the Google Chrome team. She says it was exciting to jump on a project and have her engineering teammates relying on her. They can take on any role that needs to be taken, and juggle them in a way that makes the team work like clockwork, even if it's missing about 16 different gears. Google When Business Insider talked to Mackinlay, she had just finished the APM program's traditional, two-week international tripwhich spanned four countries, including Germany and Japan.

The goal of the whirlwind excursion, which was led by Mayer before she went to Yahoo, is to let the odd APMs see firsthand how people are using technology in different parts of the world.

Mackinlay said the experience made her realize that internationalizing Google's products is about so much more than just translating everything into a different language. To optimize a service or feature to someone in a different country, you have to sit down with real users, push aside past ideas of user research, and figure out what they really need, Mackinlay says. For example, when you're designing a product for people who type in characters, a visual search might make more sense.

Part of that value was added by the good company she was in. Mackinlay says her brilliant, interesting, and funny peers blew her away and impressed her every single day. Unsurprising, given that only the highest-caliber candidates get selected for the competitive APM program. Because she's passionate about education, Mackinlay was gunning for a role with its classroom team. There were no spots open, but her excitement was so apparent she was given a trial project to work on. The hard work paid off.

Ultimately, Mackinlay's dedication is part of what makes her so "Googley. To answer, she tries to think about whether that person would have something they could talk passionately about to someone next to them at the lunch table for 30 minutes.
